Beginning with the Maldivian Pass in the 1950s, passports have undergone significant transformations following independence in 1965. From the early 'A' series to the introduction of the first electronic passport in 2007, each milestone marks the Maldives' commitment to secure and recognized international travel.

Evolution of Maldivian Passports

The first formal travel document. The Maldivian Pass facilitated trade travel, primarily for fish exports, and established the foundation for official international travel documentation.

Issued to Maldivians as British Protected Persons of the Maldive Islands, enabling international travel prior to the establishment of a sovereign Maldivian passport authority.

The first passport issued directly by the Maldivian Government, marking a significant milestone in the country’s assertion of administrative and sovereign authority.

Issued following the restoration of Independence on 26 July 1965. This passport was administered by the newly established Passport Office, responsible for immigration control.

The second major passport series (the ‘A’ series), following Independence. Enhanced passport design with improved security features and standardized format.

First passport issued after the institutional reform of the Passport Office into the Department of Immigration & Emigration. passport format with increased pages and improved administrative structure.

Modern passport design with enhanced security features and increased page count for frequent travellers.

Successive upgrades enhancing security features and document integrity in alignment with international standards.

The first biometric passport was introduced on the 42nd anniversary of Independence, incorporating biometric technology and meeting ICAO standards.

A highly secure biometric passport featuring a polycarbonate data page, laser engraving, and 34 advanced security features. The Maldives became the first SAARC member state to introduce this level of biometric passport technology.
