Maldives Immigration has introduced a more streamlined process for tourist visa extensions, effective from April 23, 2026, as part of the Maldives 2.0 Initiative aimed at enhancing digital services and improving the overall visitor experience.
The updated system removes the need for applicants to re-enter information already available in the database. Key details, including passport information and accommodation records, will now be automatically populated, making the application process faster and more convenient.
Tourists can apply for visa extensions by logging into the IMUGA portal. By entering a passport number or uploading the passport biodata page, the system will retrieve and complete the required personal information. Applicants must also upload a passport-size photograph taken within the last 12 months.
The submission of the passport biodata page is only required in specific cases, such as when a passport has been renewed or when the provided details do not match existing records. Applicants who have changed their accommodation during their stay can update their hotel details directly within the application.
Processing times have been significantly reduced, with visa extension applications now expected to be completed within 48 hours. Visa holders are reminded to comply with the conditions of their permits and remain within the scope of the visa granted.
This improvement reflects the government’s continued commitment to leveraging digital innovation to deliver efficient, user-friendly public services while supporting the tourism sector.
